Book Beau Review

After a long hiatus on Kickstarter, I started backing another project again.
The reason why I stopped using Kickstarter is that I met a scammer (Yeah they have like a second company or something. So I don’t know why they can’t deliver) and a few products that I don’t really used. So I became very selective. But I decided to back only products that I would use. I can’t remember how I came across Book Beau – could be some bookish post. Then when I went to their Etsy, I was so disappointed that their store is closed.

Then I saw that they have a Kickstarter! I backed because it is a bookish product – something I would use! I couldn’t decided on the size so I backed all 3 sizes.

So BB is like a pouch thingy with pad to protect your book. If you read alot and own alot of books, you would know the feeling of having a book with folded edge. Horrible feeling!

The idea of BB isn’t exactly something very unique. Well, if you are talented, you can easily DIY. But I can’t sew so I have to spend money to get one!

I love the Carousel fabric. It is so pretty ❤ But I regretted on the Carina Nebula. The photo look so much nicer. The real thing just look different. 😦

Oh, the smaller one fit in my new Hobonichi Techo 😀

Okay now for rants…

The first issue that I have is the choice of fabric. One main reason why I backed this project is they have the Harry Potter Quirky Wizards fabric that I am fond of! But it was later out of stock due to supply issue. It was a major disappointment but things do happen in Kickstarter project! They have used Always (shown above) as the replacement. Okay, I do love the “Always” but it has become a bit overrated for me. I get too much of the “Always” stuffs in the previous subbox. And B&W fabric is too plain for my liking. So I choose other 2 fabrics instead of having all the same like I wanted.

The second issue is the additional shipping issue which I did not get any satisfactory answer. So I added on another BB as I wanted to give it to a friend for Christmas. The post in Kickstarter didn’t mention anything about additional shipping that I have to pay for. When I emailed them, they ignored me as they were busy with shipping and upgrading. So after they ship (that’s would be my third issue), I decided to email them. At first someone who just joined their team told me it was quite clearly stated. Then when I replied back with the link. She told me that she will pass it to her superior as she wasn’t here during the Kickstarter period. So her superior came back and say that backerkit will auto adjust for shipping blah blah. I did use a backerkit a couple of times before and is quite familiar with the system. But I never have an issue as it was always highlighted to me. Actually the amount is not a lot. But my point is that if there is additional shipping, backers should be notified as I would have get more to save on shipping.

The third issue is on the shipping. When they said they shipped everything out, but I didn’t get anything so I decided to email to them. Again, there was a issue with backerkit and it was marked shipped. So they have to adjust the system so that they can ship again.

Despite the issues, I am still quite happy with the items except for one fabric which didn’t look as nice as photos. I may not buy from them again since I have 3! That’s quite enough to last a lifetime. But their store would be opening soon. So purchasing from them would be much easier.

Bullet Journal & how it works for me?

I have heard of Bullet Journal but never get around to understand it until a few days ago. I am not going to explain about Bullet Journal as there is so much info from googling.

Now I am going to talk about how it will works for me? I have not started on it yet but I will do so in the next couple of weeks on an old moleskine that I have ditched!

My problem – Too many notebooks and too many information everywhere! I have too many notebooks (oops!) and information are everywhere… I tried digital (GoogleDrive), numerous apps, notebooks etc.. Some “projects” that I was planning ended up uncompleted. Notebooks written for a few pages and it was then ditched. One of which I am re-starting was an expensive (!!) Le Petit Prince Moleskine hardcover! With BuJo, I can consolidate everything into a single notebook! The problem with a planner is there is no flexibility in adding pages. I know, there is Midori Traveler. But I will not get it as it’s against what I believe in (No animal thing for me :)). I did do some planning with a fauxdori but I never likes it as the space is too small.
Then I would have excuse to buy new stationaries (HAHAHA!)…
There is not right or wrong on how you manage your BuJo which is great for me. I am still going to keep a planner (Of cos! I just spend $113 on a new Hobonichi + accessories!!) so I am not going to do the monthly or daily things.

03 September 2017

It has been a long time since I do a random post!

So here it is…

Journal
I have been attempting to keep up with my journal (as usual). I always love Kikki K’s 365 but the price put me off. I found an cheaper alternative from Taobao but I am still not updating it daily. I always say this but next year, I would try to do it on a daily basis. In the meantime, I would just write whenever I feels like to.

I have been watching too much soap!
I am currently watching a old soap of mine. I loveeeee that soap when I was in still in school but school have prevented me from watching it properly. I been wanting to catch up on it for several years and found it online a few weeks ago. It is addictive as I know all the characters so well. At the same thing, I seen things from a new angle. I realise that it has becoming too addictive a couple of weeks back and have since implemented a system where I watch it on alternate days. This allows me to work on other tasks and hopefully be more efficient!

I finally cancelled my HP subboxes!
I was very determined to cancel the Lootcrate ones as they are rather trashy. I was never satisfy with any of the box with the amount of money put in. Although it was licensed products, but they look simply cheap looking. GeekGear is abit hard to let go as they generally have better products (Although one month I received some childish rubber band and silicon mold which I would never use – safety concern!) I delayed the cancellation by skipping the next renewal but I decided it was enough. I wasn’t particularly excited for the box that I received. I forgot to skip the month! It was good but I have too much of the similar products – tees, posters, enamel pins.. It was just too much for a learning minimalist! So I pulled the plug a few days and feels happy!

But I subscribed to a new box!
My purchase of a new planner regain my interest for stationaries as I am so excited to for the new year to start writing. One of the accessories I stopped myself from buying is the Hobonichi memo pad. I decided that Field Note (which I always wanted to try out) would fit in the need. So I came across their subscription packs which seems too intriguing for me! Before I knew it, I purchased the subscription box and 2 packs of the limited edition packs (to save on shipping ha!). I would keeping them for next year to use along with my new hobo 🙂 I know I have many notebooks but I do not have compact ones to slot into the hobo cover.

Minimalism Efforts
I have been reducing my wardrobe. It hasn’t been easy but I try to get rid of clothes slowly! What I do is pack the clothes I do not wear in a box/plastic bag but I do not throw it away immediately. But I would throw it after a few days. This would allows me to realise that the clothes are useless to me since I don’t wear it.

I have a dilemma for books. I have dig out two stacks of old novels that I do not want to keep. But as a bookish person, I find it hard to get rid of it.

Other than that, I am still working hard at NOT SPENDING on unnecessary thing. I keep reminding myself in my planner etc.

18 June 2017

Wow it has been so long again!!

I tried posting a few times but the post somehow seems to be stuck at “draft” like forever.  But anyway, It is high time that I try to post something again….

Random stuffs that probably do not make sense to anyone but me 🙂
1) Work is fine. But I am feeling a bit stressful… But I hope it would ease up next week.
2) I (finally) cancelled my subscription to both LootCrate & GeekGear. I skipped the renewal for GG. But I am quite sure that I would cancel it eventually. I received way too much shirts & they are not useful to me as I don’t wear shirts as much nowadays! It is just wasting space in my wardrobe. Another problem with them is the quality of the items. So far, I am not very impressed with any of them. GG is generally better but I felt the value is just not quite there since I paid so much for shipping. The desire to own more HP-related merchandise was a lot less strong now.  WELL, I still have not get my illustrated books. So I would probably save up for that instead 🙂
3) I am watching an old show from Hong Kong’s TVB. Really old. Like 10 years old. So from watching the show, I realise that I have forgotten the joy of going to the shopping malls to shop. The characters in the show likes to shop in a physical mall as technology wasn’t so advance back then. I have mentioned that I tends to avoid shopping malls as I didn’t want to buy things that I don’t use. And I am such a avid online shopper – I even buy my stationaries online! But as my mindset begin to change, I would be able to resist temptations to buy things that I do not need. I am able to walk through the shopping mall without buying anything! So it is no longer a “threat” to me. Now I enjoy walking shopping malls whenever I need to buy something. Perhaps It is better to feel and touch the product before buying.
4) So in the recent weeks, I have been discovering Happiness through Action for Happiness. I quite enjoy the course as it bring new perspectives to things. One particular thing that I have learned is meditation. It is something I never thought of doing or thinking about. Perhaps I would plan my time and incorporate it into my daily life!
5) I finally found an alternative to Kikki K’s 365! Despite being so in love with Kikki K’s stuffs, but I couldn’t bear to spend much there as they are very expensive. I mean I love stationaries but spend $20-$30 on a notebook is insane! So I found an cheaper alternative from Taobao (of course!). So once it arrive, I would do what I have been wanted to do…. Journaling everyday!
6) I have been trying (and unsuccessfully) to wake up early… hmm I read that it is important to do some exercise before you start your day. I have been feeling less energetic for the past couple of weeks. In fact, I have slept earlier than I usually do. I suspected that it is due to the fact that I am not as active as I should be.
Nevertheless, I have made a point to walk back home from the train station after work. So I am walking for about 15mins each day. I am happy with the achievement. But I hoping to do more.
7) My spend tracking has failed. But then, I barely spend much these days…
8) Now for my favourite topic… As always, I would try to minimise as much as I could. It works at times but it doesn’t work at times. Of course, I always train myself to differentiate with “need” and “want”. Ultimately, it is only things that I need should be purchased. But then it isn’t an easy tasks since buying things online is so easy 😦 I am also actively clearing my wardrobes… so if there is any thing that I no longer want, I would throw away. And I really need to keep an wishlist!
9) How can I forget to mention this!!! Downton Abbey Exhibition!!! Yes I am such a big fan!!! I purchased the tickets on the first day when it has started selling… I am going next Monday!! I am super excited (of course)….  😀

Why is Sat the most important day for me?

A friend commented that she notice that I am seldom “online” on WhatsApp & reply to WhatsApp messages from most Fridays till Sundays. It is true that I kinda have that habit established to I avoid social chatting as much as I can during that period.

Firstly, I hate “chatting” on WhatsApp. Gone were the days that we were actively chatting online. MSN. Whatever. Now I am all grown up. I have much more important things to do.  Spending time chit chatting (on text) was never my kind of thing. Although I did have a period that I did like to chit chat with a friend… Well, she was the one who keep sending me messages. But I realise it is time wasting. Before you knew it, you have spend 1-2 hours “chatting” and you haven’t do anything else.

Secondly, I like to be productive. So… my weekends are busy with tasks, to-do etc. Hence, Saturday becomes the most important day for me for the week.

Even though I get home much earlier after I changed my job last Oct. But still, I don’t get much done. Decluttering on a weekday evening? Yeah, that’s would be so fun! After I came home, I have dinner, then bath, then I just do not want to be involve in tasks that will cause me to feel sweaty. So I seldom do decluttering on weekdays. In fact, sometimes my room is in a huge mess until Saturday. Oops, I know. I shouldn’t have leave it till Saturday. But I just don’t want to take that risk. So Saturday is the best time to organise, declutter & minimise! I usually wake up about 9am or earlier and spend the rest of the day doing some awesome like decluttering etc. As much I love being outside having fun, but I realise that my priority is to focus on what is more important. Well of course sometimes I do have to be out. So, I switch around and work on it on Sunday instead. Nevertheless, Saturday is still important. That friend of mine made an decision 2 weeks ago which I never understand. She told her boss that she will go back to work on Saturday to replace one of the day where there was an shutdown. Why would you want to work on Saturday? Saturday is not about having your well-deserved rest and fun. It is also on the days that we can spend on doing things we never have the time to do on weekdays. If I work on Saturday, it means that I have no time again as Sunday are dedicated for reading, watching movies etc.  For e.g. yesterday I worked on a task that I keep delaying… I finally “declutter” my MacBook Pro!! It took me 8-9 hours. So if I didn’t have the Saturday, then I wouldn’t have the time as I wouldn’t feel like doing such a tedious task on Sunday. This is especially so if I have only Sunday to rest.

Review: Books.com.tw 博客來 (Taiwan)

I used to buy my Chinese books from books 博客來. It is cheaper than getting from the retail shop but it wasn’t exactly that cheap either as they uses DHL for shipping. So I always have to buy a few books in order to save on shipping. I kinda stop because I don’t read so much Chinese books nowadays.

I always like books 博客來 as they are very efficient and fuss free  – ship fast, never get my orders wrong and wide choices of (chinese) books. Sometimes I just browse and find some books to buy  because the website is so easy to use . I can read both traditional and simplified chinese text so  I am fine to buy the books there. Some people can only read simplified text which is the text that China and most APAC countries including Singapore are using. So this may not suit them. I particularly enjoy the translated version of Japanese triller/crime books. Being NOT a Japanese, I can’t read the Japanese version obviously. So my best alternative is the Chinese translated version. It is also where I got my favourite Minimalism book =)

So a couple days ago, I saw on a television programme that the orders can now be picked up from 7-11! So I decided to give it a try again! As an avid online shopper, I always find picking parcels from 7-11 very fascinating. Over the years of shopping  on taiwanese websites, I always wonder about the feeling of picking up your parcels from 7-11. I know Ninja Van do send delivery to Guardian. In fact, I have picked up a couple of times from Guardian. BUT its not the same thing. 7-11 is like the originator of this concept. At least it is in taiwan. They have this thing for years.

Feeling very excited, I went online and try to login to my inactive account. Luckily I still remembered the password. Within 20 minutes, I have checked out 2 books. I was super happy because it wasn’t that expensive to check out just two books. I feel that it was originally much more expensive when they have the old shopping method – via DHL.

As expected, my order was shipped the next day! It took only 3 days to fly over and it was at the locker at the 7-11 outlet I have selected! Since it was a Saturday, I couldn’t pick it up. So I delayed till Monday to pick it up after work. They only gave you 3 days so time is really tight. If you have any traveling plans, then its safer not to place any orders.

So I stepped into 7-11 and asked the store assistant about it. She say at the back. I thought she meant at the back. You know outside the store. So I went out and walked one round. I took out my phone and realise the address stated the 7-11 address so where is the thing? I went in again but there was 2-3 people in the queue. And I realise there is something at the back. Funny that the store assistant didn’t stop me when I leave the store. But anyway, I went there and key in the pin to get the parcel.  Well, I would say the feeling is similar to going to a locker from SingPost. It doesn’t seem that exciting as expected. haha. But definitely it is much convenience as delivery to house may not be the most ideal method for some people. Nobody would be at home on weekdays!

The concept they wanted to promote is that you can get your books any day as 7-11 is operated 24 hours. Overall, I enjoyed the experience. It didn’t give me the “real feel” of picking up at 7-11 as it is an locker that you used to self-service.  But it is fuss-free and efficient!
