Easier to find things!

This week I discovered one of the many benefits of minimalism – Easier to find things!

I was never a messy person. In fact, I organised my things very well! I have many things in my room but I knew where I placed my stuffs. In the past, I was able to find things.. but it takes some times and more efforts to locate. But with lesser things, there is lesser areas to look for and hence, the time spend on searching will cut down. I was looking for an old octopus card in preparation for my upcoming trip to Hong Kong next week. In the past before I started cutting down things massively, I have 4-5 areas to look for in my room. But with the massive minimalism, I know straightaway and only have one area to look for..where I put all my traveling stuffs and its not there. So I am quite sure its with someone else or I have simply forgot that I have returned it!

In the past, I would tend to spend so much times on these few areas that I thought I have kept the thing. I wouldn’t just give up if it is not found in these few areas. I would most likely to search the whole room. Even though I feel that I organised well, but since it cannot be located, I would think that I must have misplaced it somewhere else. But with lesser things, there is even better organisation and you would know that its not possible for it to be elsewhere. Even if I do ended up searching the whole room, because there is lesser things, I will not spend so much time!

Baggallini Avenue Tote Review

Late last year, I have changed job. And I started bringing my own lunch. Being me, I changes bag often and sometimes I just want to carry a huge tote to throw everything in!

3 weeks ago, I decided that to find a bag with organising compartments! I didn’t realise it for years that such bag are much useful. It is much more functional as compared to bags that look nice but do not have the compartments. Yes I am super obsessed with organising. An ex colleague used to comment that I have way too many pouches in my bags. Yes I love putting things into pouch because I simply cannot stand them all over the places. I usually have 2-4 pouches depending on what bag I uses. I also realise that there isn’t much choices in the market. Not much bag companies focus on this – making bags with compartments.

So after doing some research, I decided to purchase an Baggallini bag. There is a lot of good reviews on this bag (Avenue Tote) on eBags, Zappos and Amazon. I wanted to buy from Zappos as it is cheaper. But fortunately, I was unable to pay with my card. It was fortunate as I realise Amazon has it and was on sale! I purchased it at USD69.90 and now it is listed at USD98! And I get free shipping! Well I have to spend USD125. But it was worth it. I purchased some OST and Funko.

Baggallini focus on bags for traveling. My main focus is for commuting rather than traveling as I don’t like carrying a lot of stuffs when traveling. But who knows? Maybe one day, I will take this on a trip.

On the first look it wasn’t impressive. It look cheap. But after examining the material, I felt that it seems to be of good quality. The bag is  made of nylon and made in China. But the quality is different from those usual nylon bags that I have seen from China. This is far better quality. Those cheaper nylon are usually very shiny looking. But this bag seems to be in between canvas and those lower quality nylon bag. I felt that it could last much longer than those bags. But my main concern is how waterproof this bag is. I guess I will find out when I uses this when it is raining.

Of course the main focus of the bag is the compartments! The video on Zappos shows the different compartments and it was the deciding factor for me. I felt that the compartments would be useful as I can now organise my things into the bag instead of putting them in pouches! As a result, I may cut down on pouches. Yay minimalism! I don’t carry laptop or tablet. But the compartment meant for laptop/tablet can be used to put planner, notebooks etc. When I buy bags with compartments, I always ensure that there is one for pens. Because being me, I cannot go anywhere without a pen! So I am looking forward to using the pen compartment.

So, on the first look, this bag seems really functional and useful with the different compartments. The materials aren’t something very impressive. But it looks like good quality and seems lasting. So this bag will replaces a couple of big tote that I have to be the daily work tote. I am going to start using and will eventually “remove” the rest from my life =)

Organising, decluttering and Minimalising

Recently, professional organisers are in the news. Who are they – In short, they help clients to organise and decluttering. Some clients paid them for their service and advices. Some have no idea what to do about the mess and want to be organise! Hence, they decided to engage an expert!

I wrote about Decluttering 101 about 2 years ago. It is not 101 tips but it is a good 23 pointers to get you started.

I am not against getting professional advice or help. But most of the stuffs are pretty much common senses. Throw what you don’t need or never use for a long time. Organise the rest by using plastic containers etc. Keep things to a minimum. And don’t buy things you don’t need. Most people have a problem (Myself included) because they are attached to their belonging… and likes to shop for things.

Professional organiser/expert are good for the first use. But they are not to help everytime you have a mess. It’s all about habits. Those professional organsier/expert mainly (?) gives tips on keeping your stuffs organise. BUT I don’t think they actually provide the root cause of the problem. In the first place, if you don’t have so much stuffs, you wouldn’t have the mess to deal with. So at the same time, CHANGE your habits! For e.g. do not go to the malls for window shopping as you know you would end up buying 1 or 2 things. Find other activities to do – walk at the park!

So organising and decluttering should conclude with a minimalising!

11 Feb 2017

I have been posting actively cos I finally figure out how to post using mobile! I didn’t remember the access previously but I finally figured out! So I have been posting at random timing while I am at work lol

Merch
I just learn a new word last week. Merch is the short form of merchandise, how clever! I have posted 2-3 posts on my new merch obsessions. There are few more to come! This is actually what keep me posting cos it’s something exciting that I love to share. I am thinking of making a new tag for it… I try to post the Merch stuffs separately so as not to bore people with it.

Minimalism
Yesterday, I sold an bag from Kickstarter! I wasn’t too sad about the “loss” cos I have kept it in my cupboard for like 2-3 years?! Then it motivated me…since I am free now (from school etc), I should start to get some actual work done. My goal is get more done on weekdays. So I am going to start listing tasks!

I posted a lot of things for sale. I know they are not easy to sell. But at least I try to post them online. I have been procrastinating for a good while. I have many more items to be posted. And if there is no takers after a few months or so, I probably just throw it away or something :/

DVDs, CDs and books are always under-valued when you try to get rid of them. For e.g. you buy a set of DVD for say 10bucks. You can only sell it for 5bucks after you watched once. I never throw away DVDs cos they are so precious (Insert Gollum’s voice). But I really got to think carefully on my future purchases. For a few years, I bought some DVDs and never get around to watch it. I know! I will start watching them more often since I have the shiny new blu ray player! I have started a list (on google drive) to update the ones I really want to keep (HP, LOTR and The Grand Budapest Hotel is in the list). I would try to clear 1-2 DVDs per month so as to get the list growing. Why buy DVDs? That’s the question I always. They take up space and hard to get rid of when you longer want them. But I enjoy the feeling of watching DVDs at home… Its not as good as going to the cinema but I don’t have the luxury of going to cinema every time. Beside, getting a DVDs means you can rewatch them anytime you want. But I would be selective.

CDs on other hand is much easier to archive. For old CDs with artiste I no longer have an affection for, I usually will throw away the case but I would keep the CD cos I simply do not want to benefit anyone ha! It is however harder to sell. Since 2 years ago or so, I have started to go digital! It is so easy to go to iTunes to download the music I wanted. Plus I wouldn’t need actual space to store them. And I don’t actually have the player to play them. My MacBook don’t even have the drive anymore. However, few days ago, I realise I don’t have all of the Harry Potter OST which I always thought I have. But I am keeping this in my wishlist for 2-3 months before I consider to purchase it.

Books are another headache things! I have been having a dilemma for a longest time. I like both physical book and digital. Physical book give the real feel of book but digital on other hands means it do not need to store them. So I ended up getting both types. Whenever I picture a future room/house of mine, I always have a bookshelf even though people barely read nowadays. But the books that I choose to purchase has to be really selective. I never throw away any books (but I am on the verge of throwing away Twilight – okay selling them cheap). So….

Other things I have done:
– Review my “shoes” and “bags” list. The last review was in Nov! I am happy with my “shoes” progress but my “bags” aren’t too progressive. I probably look into what I can get rid of tomorrow. I also threw away some oldSt shoes.
– Donate some stationaries to work. I used to hate the idea of bringing my own stationaries as I thought any decent office should supply them. But since I am no longer a student, I find that I have too much stationaries! It was also due to my obsessions a couple of months ago! (I am still a little obsessed but I am in better control!) So I bring some stuffs to work so I have more space at home and beside I don’t use them so what is the point of keeping them here!

05 Feb 2017

I have been busy binge rewatching the HP movies! So my dad finally set up the blu ray player for me. So I started binge watching on Thursday after I came back from work. It took me one and half day.  I am not a super fan of the movie. (You can’t be if you love the books). But yeah, its great to watch! I love most of the casting.

Maybe it’s psychological thing or what. But the screen resolution do seems better after I use the blu ray player. There is talk of 4K UHD set coming out. But my tv can’t play them so it’s useless to splurge on that kind of money.

My Hufflepuff rug from Thinkgeek has arrived!
1234af68-6444-4415-9d9d-3b32ba01cd55_zpsuse23h4x
(It’s still all wrapped up cos my mum say she will find time to put this up with me) I was writing this and she say lets put it up.

I think it’s super worth it. Although it’s 100% polyester (My current rug is 100% cotton..) and Made in China, but you cannot find this anywhere else. The “feel” of it is definitely different – it’s not soft but scratchy!

I wanted to use it to cover my cabinet instead but it’s obviously too big seeing the real thing lol
But I believe this would be a super awesome decoration!

On a side note, their shipping is really much slower these few days as they are moving warehouse. It’s stated on their website. I wish they would ship the Newt’s scarf I ordered quickly!

Talking about decoration etc, I am going to redecorate my room. I have been looking at the HP-inspired rooms over pinterest, they are so beautiful!

Here’s some thoughts:
– The first obvious thing to do is to continue to get rid of more stuffs. Yup, I still have too many of everything. I really need to get rid of them! But I cannot be getting rid of them tooooo fast. I always wanted to just chuck some stuffs. But these are really good stuffs that can still be used. So I think it would take some times.
– Of course essentially, I have to stop buying so much stuffs. I know, I have been trying for so longggg. Now I think I am much more determined. Minimalism all the way!!!
– Wallpaper. My current walls are in pastel blue. It’s good if I am in Ravenclaw? lol. But I want it to be either bright yellow, maroon (Ya! I always love maroon but I am in Hufflepuff but who cares!) or vintage patterns like stone or sand? For DIY, it would be cheaper but I don’t know if I have the patience or talent for such project. I could DIY an area first. For e.g. the wall in front of my table. Otherwise, I can ask a contractor to do it for me. It would be good as it would be a complete makeover. But I think it’s not going to be cheap. And furthermore, my walls are still okay. They have been repainted 3-4 years ago. They still look ok. Such a waste of money. Otherwise I could keep it the same way. I was thining of going for an nautical theme previous year. So perhaps it could be a mixture  of both theme.  Then the pastel blue walls fit in 😀
– I have 2 cupboards, 1 cabinets, 1 kiddish (I am not kidding. It’s plastic and in pastel pink!) shelf. The kiddish looking shelf have to move somewhere obviously. Ok, my mum bought it for me. Not that I don’t appreciate it. But it’s super odd. The stuffs on the shelf are things like makeup, facial products… these are the stuffs which I wanted to get rid of (Yes, those memebox days….)! The rest of the things like tissue box can be moved somewhere. The other cupboards and cabinets are fine as they are in brown. Well, my wardrobe are in black/brown so it make sense to keep to this colour scheme. Brown is kinda like fitting with the HP theme. But I probably try to paste some pattern on it or something!
– As for the contents, I need to get rid of some books, textbooks (NOT from Hogwarts :P), some stationary (I was way too obsessed with stationaries :P) and less clothes, bags and shoes. Minimalism! Its so hard. But I got to do it!
– Picture frame! I never thought of hanging anything. But picture frame are very important in the wizarding world lol. Of course my picture don’t move. But I am going to hang a couple of it! I always like the view of hogwarts at night. It would be wonderful to display it.

01 Jan 2017

Happy new year!

I have been looking forward to a new year – as I can finally start my routine of doing planning and organising.  So looking forward to a fresh start!

This year’s new year resolution:
1) Keep room tidy & organise
2) Minimalism
3) Need not want
4) Reading target – 20
5) Daily planning
6) Write more, read more
7) Brisk walking

For me, the most important thing is to “practice” minimalism. I have not been applying the concepts to my life as diligently as I would. But hey it’s a new year, I hope I would be able to work on this again!

A friend bought this from Japan Daiso for me 🙂 It is so cute! Japan’s Daiso is one good reason for me to visit Japan as they always have different stuffs. I wish they could have it in Singapore too. I am using it to record my spending 🙂  I hope I won’t write much in it!

On the background is a notebook from Campus which I am using to jot down my daily thoughts! It is a great notebook as it’s not pricey and it’s super smooth to write on. I got it at Tokyo Hands. For buying a pack of 5 and a stack of loose leaf, I got 2 notebooks free 😀 Both Muji and Daiso sell similar notebooks. But the ones from Muji are not as good. I haven’t try the one from Daiso.

It was always good to meet up with friends over for meals or coffee. As I grow older and having a change in lifestyle, I no longer find shopping a joy. Sure, I do like shopping once in a while. But mainly I shop to get the essential stuffs. I am okay with not shopping for a long time. To me, the most enjoyable thing is to talk to friends. I realise some people are glue on their mobile phone instead of having conversations. There was this friends  who have dinner next to us. They were looking at their phones instead of talking. Maybe they have shopped for long time so they don’t want to chat. But well, I think it’s important to keep your phones away when you are having dinner.

As mentioned in my previous post, brisk walking is in my agenda to get more active. For me, it is never about pushing myself to run or jog for marathon. I don’t like gym activities either. Maybe few years down the road, when I have the space, I would get a treadmill. But for now, I enjoy brisk walking with the nature. 🙂

I finally update my reading challenge for 2017. I haven’t read much for 2016 due to my study. But I will definitely aim to read more. In fact, my target has been set at 20.

28 Dec 2016

My answer is always the same when I being asked what I am planning to do for christmas and new year – Spring cleaning for the new year! Traditionally, we will do spring cleaning as in prepare for the upcoming chinese new year. This period is always the best time as it is a good idea to start early! With the promotion going around in the stores, it is best to avoid visiting the malls. I have started doing this for 3-4 years and it remains as one of the activity. This year is extremely important as I haven’t been organising well due to my hectic schedule with school and work. With school being over for good, I can now concentrate better.

So I started yesterday and continue for a few hours today. It was great thinking about all the decluttering I have done.

-Almost all the invoices from buying things online. This has been accumulated since I start buying things which is like years ago. So there is a stack of papers and I decided to throw them away. I would never look at it anyway!
– Some magazine and newspaper cutting and brochures. I haven’t accumulate a lot but well, they should go to the bin!
– some old cards. Totally useless
– a couple of gifts from undesirable people. Ha.
– some old CDs. I used to love buying CDs back in those days as it is the only way to get music. But with iTunes, I kinda stop buying CDs. It help to save space anyway. I still have lots of CDs. But I decided to keep only the ones that I really love.
– bags. I have been trying to reduce my bag collection. Nothing much have been accomplish and I am still buying bags. But I am happy to throw out a couple of them once a in while.
– poster. I have a love/hate thing for poster. They are nice to look at but yet, they waste space and I wouldn’t put them up. So I decided to throw away those that I no longer love.

I will continue to organise, decluttering and minimising next week.

And  I started using my new planner. Yay!

15c39e7b-e49e-43ca-add2-0269c1b13806_zps7rqrzuwe
So last year, I experimented with a few planners. Finally, I picked this – Le Petit Prince Weekly notebook diary planner from Moleskine!

1) I love the weight! The problem I have last year was the weight with Plum planner. Yes it is great with all the space and customisation. But it was too heavy and I ended up not getting much out of it. sigh.
2) I like Moleskine paper. It is smooth to write on!
3) Le petit prince is always one of my favourite. But you couldn’t find their stuffs easily. I picked this over peanuts which I love too!
4) The size is great. The writing space is just nice. It’s not a lot. But I realise that I don’t need a lot of space like I would write so much in it. But it’s not too small either. Until I have to squeeze my handwriting.
5) It’s hardcover but not too hard. The cover is hard enough for protection but it’s not too hard either.
6) You could never go wrong with Moleskine!

Actually, mainly it was due to a voucher I have! I walked around the bookstore for a long time and this is the only thing I wanted.  My wish for this year is always the same – hopefully I would plan with more diligence.  🙂
